The Fox and the Crow

 22. The Fox and the Crow

One sunny day, a hungry crow found a piece of cheese in a farmer's house. Excited, she picked it up in her beak and flew to a nearby tree to enjoy her tasty treat. As she settled on a branch, she held the cheese tightly in her beak.

Not far away, a clever fox was wandering through the woods. He caught sight of the crow with the cheese and decided to use his cunning to get it. The fox approached the tree and called out to the crow, “Oh, beautiful crow! How stunning you look today! Your feathers are so shiny and your eyes are so bright. I’ve heard that your voice is as lovely as your appearance. Would you sing a song for me?”

The crow, flattered by the fox’s words, thought, “I do have a lovely voice. Perhaps I should sing a little.” She opened her beak to sing, and as she did, the piece of cheese fell from her mouth and plopped to the ground below.

The quick-witted fox immediately grabbed the cheese and took a big bite. “Thank you for the treat, dear crow!” he said with a sly smile. “You have a beautiful voice, but it seems you should be careful not to let flattery distract you.”

The crow realized that she had been tricked by the fox's clever words. Embarrassed, she learned an important lesson about being wary of flattery.

Moral of the story: Beware of those who use flattery to deceive you.
