The Fox and the Grapes
38. The Fox and the Grapes
One sunny afternoon, a hungry fox was wandering through the forest in search of food. After a long and tiring day, he came across a vineyard filled with juicy, ripe grapes hanging from the vines. His mouth watered at the sight of them.
The grapes were hanging high above the ground, and the fox stretched his neck to reach them. He jumped and leaped, trying to grab a bunch, but they were just out of reach. Determined, the fox tried again and again, leaping higher each time, but he still couldn’t reach the delicious grapes.
Frustrated and exhausted, the fox finally sat down under the vine, panting and frowning. He looked up at the grapes, swaying gently in the breeze, and said to himself, “These grapes are probably sour anyway. I don’t want them!”
With that, he turned away and walked off, pretending that he had never wanted the grapes in the first place. As he trotted back into the woods, he felt proud of his cleverness in dismissing something he could not have.
But deep down, he was still hungry and disappointed, wishing he had been able to enjoy the sweet fruit.
Moral of the story: It’s easy to despise what you cannot have.
