The Honest Woodcutter
30. The Honest Woodcutter
Once upon a time, in a small village, there lived a humble woodcutter. Every day, he would venture into the nearby forest to chop wood for his family. He worked hard and earned just enough to provide for them.
One day, while cutting down a tree near a river, the woodcutter accidentally dropped his axe into the water. He was devastated, as it was his only tool, and without it, he couldn’t earn a living. Sitting by the riverbank, he began to cry, feeling hopeless.
Suddenly, a fairy appeared before him. “Why are you crying, honest woodcutter?” she asked kindly.
The woodcutter replied, “I lost my axe in the river. It is my only means of supporting my family, and now I have nothing.”
The fairy felt pity for him and said, “I can help you.” She then dove into the river and emerged with a beautiful golden axe. “Is this your axe?” she asked.
The woodcutter shook his head and replied, “No, that is not mine. I have a simple axe made of iron.”
The fairy smiled and dove back into the river, returning with a silver axe. “What about this one? Is this yours?”
Again, the woodcutter replied, “No, that is not mine either. I appreciate your help, but I must be honest; my axe is made of iron.”
The fairy, impressed by his honesty, dove into the river once more. This time, she emerged with the woodcutter’s iron axe. “Is this your axe?” she asked.
“Yes! That is mine!” he exclaimed, joyfully taking his axe.
The fairy smiled warmly and said, “Because of your honesty, I will reward you. You may keep all three axes: the golden one, the silver one, and your iron axe.”
The woodcutter thanked the fairy profusely and returned home with his new tools. He used the axes wisely and shared his fortune with his family, never forgetting the lesson he had learned about honesty.
From that day on, the woodcutter became known as the honest woodcutter, and his integrity brought him respect and prosperity in the village.
Moral of the story: Honesty is the best policy, and it is rewarded in the end.
