The Lion and the Rabbit
15. The Lion and the Rabbit
In a dense jungle, there lived a fierce lion who was the king of the animals. He was strong and powerful, but he was also very proud. The lion often hunted the other animals, and soon, he became a threat to their lives. Fearing for their safety, the animals held a meeting to discuss their problem.
After much debate, they decided to send a clever rabbit to speak with the lion. The rabbit agreed and bravely approached the lion's den. When he arrived, the lion growled, “What do you want, little rabbit?”
The rabbit replied, “O King, I have come to suggest a solution to your hunting problem. You see, the animals are frightened, and many of us want to escape. If you allow us to live peacefully, I can bring you one animal every day as your meal.”
The lion, intrigued by the idea, agreed to the rabbit’s proposal. “Very well,” said the lion, “but if you fail to bring me an animal, I will eat you instead.”
The rabbit, clever and quick-witted, went back to the other animals and shared the lion’s decision. Each day, he would take an animal to the lion, but he made sure to be careful about his choice.
One day, the rabbit decided to play a trick on the lion. He took a longer route to the lion's den and arrived late. The lion was furious when he saw the rabbit.
“Why are you late?” the lion roared. “I should eat you for this!”
The rabbit calmly replied, “Oh great lion, I was bringing my meal when I encountered another lion who claimed to be stronger than you! He wanted to take your place as the king of the jungle. I was trying to persuade him to leave.”
The lion, feeling challenged, asked, “Where is this lion?”
The clever rabbit led the lion to a nearby well. “Look inside and see for yourself!” he said.
When the lion peered into the well, he saw his reflection and thought it was the other lion. Enraged, he roared loudly and jumped into the well to attack, only to find that there was no other lion.
The rabbit watched as the proud lion vanished, and the other animals rejoiced, thanking the clever rabbit for saving them from the lion's reign.
Moral of the story: Pride can lead to one's downfall. Cleverness and quick thinking can outsmart even the strongest adversary.
