The Little Red Hen

 13. The Little Red Hen

Once upon a time, there was a little red hen who lived on a farm. One day, she found some grains of wheat and decided to plant them. She asked her friends—the lazy dog, the sleepy cat, and the noisy duck—if they would help her plant the wheat.

“Not I!” said the dog.
“Not I!” said the cat.
“Not I!” said the duck.

So, the little red hen decided to do it all by herself. She planted the wheat, watered it, and took care of it every day. Eventually, the wheat grew tall and golden.

When it was time to harvest the wheat, the little red hen asked her friends again for help. “Who will help me harvest the wheat?” she asked.

“Not I!” said the dog.
“Not I!” said the cat.
“Not I!” said the duck.

The little red hen harvested the wheat all by herself and took it to the mill to be ground into flour.

Later, she returned home with the flour and asked her friends, “Who will help me bake bread with this flour?”

“Not I!” said the dog.
“Not I!” said the cat.
“Not I!” said the duck.

Determined, the little red hen baked the bread all by herself. When the delicious aroma filled the air, her friends came running.

“Can we have some bread?” they asked.

“No,” said the little red hen. “I did all the work, and you didn’t help me at all. I will eat the bread myself!”

And she did!

Moral of the story: Hard work pays off. Those who do not contribute should not expect to share in the rewards.
