The Owl and the Grasshopper
14. The Owl and the Grasshopper
One warm summer evening, an owl perched high on a tree branch was enjoying the calm of the night. Below, a grasshopper was singing merrily, chirping away without a care in the world. The grasshopper's joyful tune filled the air, and the owl, disturbed by the noise, decided to confront the little creature.
“Excuse me, little grasshopper,” said the owl. “Could you please stop your singing? It’s keeping me awake.”
The grasshopper, surprised by the owl's request, replied, “Why should I stop? I’m having a great time singing! Besides, the night is meant for music and celebration.”
The owl, wise and seasoned, said, “But remember, grasshopper, while you sing now, winter will come soon. You should think about preparing for the colder days ahead.”
The grasshopper laughed. “Why worry about winter? It’s warm and beautiful now! I’ll sing and dance while I can!”
Unfazed, the owl warned him, “You may regret your carefree attitude when food is scarce and the cold winds blow.”
As the seasons changed, the grasshopper continued to sing, ignoring the owl’s advice. However, when winter arrived, the grasshopper found himself cold and hungry. He searched for food but found nothing, and soon, he began to regret his lack of preparation.
One day, he saw the owl, who was warm and well-fed. The owl had stored plenty of food and was ready for winter. The grasshopper, shivering, approached the owl and said, “I should have listened to you. I’m in trouble now. Can you help me?”
The owl replied, “I can help you, but remember this lesson: it’s important to plan for the future, even when times are good.”
Moral of the story: Enjoy the present, but don’t forget to prepare for the future.
