The Tale of Peter Rabbit
41. The Tale of Peter Rabbit
Once upon a time, there were four little rabbits named Flopsy, Mopsy, Cotton-tail, and Peter. They lived with their mother in a cozy burrow under the root of a big fir tree. Their mother often told them stories about their father, who had been caught by Mr. McGregor while stealing vegetables from his garden.
One day, while his siblings played safely at home, Peter Rabbit's curiosity got the better of him. He wanted to see Mr. McGregor's garden for himself. Despite his mother's warnings, Peter decided to hop over the garden fence.
As soon as he entered the garden, he was amazed by the vibrant colors and delicious smells of the vegetables. Carrots, cabbages, and radishes were everywhere! Peter’s mouth watered, and he quickly started munching on some delicious lettuce.
Just then, he heard a loud voice behind him. It was Mr. McGregor! “What are you doing in my garden, you naughty rabbit?” he shouted. Terrified, Peter turned and ran as fast as he could, with Mr. McGregor chasing after him.
Peter dashed through the rows of vegetables, trying to escape. He zigzagged between the plants, but Mr. McGregor was fast and determined. Peter lost his way, and in his panic, he jumped into a net that Mr. McGregor had set up to catch him.
“Oh no!” cried Peter as he wriggled and squirmed, trying to break free. Just then, he spotted a little hole in the fence. Using all his strength, he managed to squeeze through, leaving the net behind.
After escaping, Peter ran as fast as his little legs could carry him. He finally reached the safety of his home, breathless and shaken. He quickly hopped inside the burrow and told his mother about his adventure.
“Oh, Peter!” she exclaimed. “You must never go into Mr. McGregor's garden again! It’s dangerous!”
Feeling guilty for his disobedience, Peter promised his mother he would never venture into the garden again. From that day on, he learned to listen to her advice and stay safe at home with his siblings.
As for Mr. McGregor, he never did catch that mischievous little rabbit again. Peter continued to explore the meadows and fields nearby but always stayed away from the garden, content to munch on the fresh grass and the carrots that his mother grew at home.
Moral of the story: Curiosity is wonderful, but it’s important to listen to the advice of those who care about you. Safety comes first!
