The Young Man and the Old Man
19. The Young Man and the Old Man
Once upon a time in a small village, there lived a young man who was full of energy and enthusiasm. He loved to explore the world around him and often boasted about his strength and abilities. One day, he came across an old man sitting quietly under a tree, observing the world with a wise smile.
Feeling proud, the young man approached the old man and said, “You know, I am strong enough to lift heavy stones and run faster than anyone in the village! What can you do with your old age and frail body?”
The old man looked at the young man and replied, “Strength is not everything, my young friend. Let me show you something important.”
Curious, the young man agreed, and the old man led him to a nearby river. As they reached the riverbank, the old man pointed to a large rock in the middle of the river. “I want you to swim across and bring back that rock,” he said.
Confidently, the young man jumped into the water and swam towards the rock. He quickly grabbed it and started swimming back. However, the strong current of the river was against him. The young man struggled to swim back with the heavy rock, and soon he began to tire.
Meanwhile, the old man stood by the riverbank, watching calmly. Just as the young man was about to give up, the old man called out, “Use your head! You are strong, but you also need to think wisely.”
Realizing the old man was right, the young man took a moment to catch his breath and think. He then remembered that he could float on his back to make it easier to return. With that in mind, he dropped the heavy rock, turned around, and floated back to the shore.
When he reached the bank, he was exhausted but relieved. “I should have thought of that sooner!” he exclaimed.
The old man smiled and said, “Strength is valuable, but wisdom is just as important. Always remember to use your mind along with your strength.”
Moral of the story: True strength lies not just in physical ability, but also in wisdom and the ability to think critically in challenging situations
