The Honest Tailor

 50. The Honest Tailor

In a bustling town, there lived a humble tailor named Thomas. He was known for his exceptional skill in sewing and his unwavering honesty. People from far and wide came to him to have their clothes made, as they trusted him completely.

One day, a wealthy merchant came to Thomas with a request. “I need a beautiful suit for an important event. Make sure it is the finest in the land!” he ordered, tossing a bag of gold coins onto the table.

Thomas smiled and nodded. “Of course, sir! I will do my very best.”

As Thomas worked on the suit, he noticed that one of the golden coins had fallen from the merchant’s bag and rolled under the table. Instead of pocketing the coin, Thomas picked it up and called out to the merchant, who was still looking at fabrics.

“Excuse me, sir! You dropped a coin,” Thomas said, holding it up for the merchant to see.

The merchant turned and frowned. “I’m not worried about that small coin. Keep it for yourself!” he said dismissively.

But Thomas shook his head. “No, sir. A coin is a coin, and it belongs to you. I cannot take what is not mine.”

The merchant, surprised by the tailor’s honesty, decided to test him further. He pulled out another handful of coins and let them slip through his fingers. “Here, take these as well. Surely, you won’t mind a little extra?”

Again, Thomas refused. “Thank you, sir, but I must insist. I will only take what is fair for the work I have done.”

The merchant was taken aback by Thomas’s integrity. “You are a rare man, tailor. I have met many who would have seized the opportunity. I respect your honesty greatly.”

Finally, the day of the fitting arrived. The merchant tried on the suit, and it fit perfectly. The tailor had worked hard to make it not only beautiful but also comfortable.

When the merchant saw himself in the mirror, he was thrilled. “This is the finest suit I have ever seen! You deserve every coin you were paid, and more!” He reached into his pocket and pulled out an extra pouch of gold. “As a reward for your honesty and skill, take this!”

Thomas accepted the extra coins with gratitude but remained humble. “Thank you, sir. I appreciate your kindness. However, I believe that honesty is its own reward.”

From that day on, the merchant spread the word about Thomas, the honest tailor. People flocked to his shop, not only for his excellent tailoring but also for the integrity he represented.

Moral of the story: Honesty is the best policy. True integrity and character will always be rewarded, sometimes in unexpected ways.
